DROMAIIDAE (Emu)
EMU
(Dromaius novaehollandie) - 160cm
FOOD:
Mainly Vegetable, native fruits, some insects
DISTRIBUTION:
Continental Australia, ranging from dry forests to open plains.
NOTES:
This is the second largest bird in the world and the national bird of Australia. The Emu has double shafted feathers but is a flightless bird. They are dependent on a daily water supply and it is the need for this daily supply that has seen flocks roaming plains and causing damage to crops, leading to ineffective Emu war in 1932. An Emu can run up to 30mph and swim.
