NOTES:
It breeds in colonies and associated with alkaline or salt lakes where numbers car run into tens of thousands. The distinctive beak enables it to feed in a very specific manner by foraging through the bottom mud of marshlands, this filter system being unique amongst birds. To minimize the effects of any predators, breeding throughout the colony is synchronized so that all the eggs are laid and hatched within a matter of days of one another.
