(Aix galericulata) - 45cm

DISTRIBUTION:
Eastern Asia from Amur and Ussuri, south through Korea, East China, Japan to Formosa; some movement South for winter.
NOTES:
This bird is one of the most colourful of all wildfowl. It belongs to the perching duck tribe, so called because they have long, sharp, strong claws and a well-developed hind toe which is not lobed. These birds are noted for their striking plumage and the peculiar whistling note in their call. They make their nests in hollow trees. The species is unfortunately threatened with the loss of their nesting habitat by forest logging.
