RED-BELLIED MACAW

(Ara Manilata) - 50 cm
FOOD: Almost exclusively the fruit of auritia and the palms.
DISTRIBUTION: Trinidad, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.
NOTES:

This is one of the largest of the miniature macaw group. These birds often rest during the day, only becoming active in the late afternoon when pairs or small groups fly about before finally alighting to feed in palm trees. Despite their size these birds are often difficult to detect among the foliage due to their coloring. The flight is unlike that of other macaws, being direct with rapid rhythmic wing-beats. The long, pointed tail and slightly backward-curving wings give these birds a streamlined appearance in the air.
