RAMPHASTIDAE (Toucans)
TOCO TOUCAN
(Ramphastos Toco) - 60cm
FOOD:
Fruit, insects, sometimes invertebrates, small lizards, snakes.
DISTRIBUTION:
South America
NOTES:
This toucan has the largest and most massive bill, which although bulky is very light and does not hamper the bird’s manoeuvrability. The bill is strengthened internally by a complex structure of fine, bony fibres. Fruit held in the tip of the bill is tossed to the back of the throat by a flick of the head. The Toucan enjoys clashing its large bill with other Toucans and pecking noisily at trees.
